New CDNetworks Research Reveals 69 Percent of US Companies' DDoS Defenses Breached in Past Year

A new report by CDNetworks, a global leader in content delivery network (CDN) and cloud security solutions, reveals a significant contradiction in US businesses’ confidence in their DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) mitigation efforts. Despite 88% of US companies expressing confidence in their current DDoS defenses, 69% reported experiencing a successful DDoS attack within the last year. This figure is second only to the UK, where 71% of companies reported similar breaches.

The survey, conducted by Sapio Research for CDNetworks, involved 500 senior IT professionals from the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, all of whom have significant IT security responsibilities. Notably, 88% of US businesses anticipate new DDoS attacks in the coming 12 months, contrasting with 77% in the DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) region.

In the DACH region, while 82% express confidence in their DDoS mitigation, more than half (57%) have suffered a successful attack in the last year.

US companies’ confidence appears to be supported by significant investments in DDoS mitigation:

• US businesses spend the most on DDoS defenses, averaging $34,750 annually, compared to $29,000 in DACH countries. Over a quarter of US respondents have invested more than $53,000 in the past year.
• 66% of US businesses plan to increase their DDoS mitigation investments in the next year.
• US businesses are most likely to have first invested in key DDoS mitigation measures over five years ago.

Despite this investment, US companies remain vulnerable, with 69% having been breached in the past year, and for 27% of these businesses, more than half of attempted DDoS attacks were successful, significantly higher than in the UK (15%).

The report also highlights that US companies believe attacks are often driven by competitors (32%) or for blackmail (30%), with the perception of targeted attacks increasing concern over their frequency.
